How to Enjoy Reading Your Bible

Reading your Bible… it is either a joy or a dread.

There is this feeling when you wake up and don’t have motivation to do anything except get a bowl of cereal and binge-watch Netflix or scroll mindlessely on Instagram.

This is what the Bible says about Scripture:

All scripture is from God, so that means it is a way for us to learn from God. God wants us to be in the Word so we can learn to live and act more like Jesus.

Though, this can be really difficult if your mindset is in another universe. When you want to go on Instagram instead of going to your Bible, or when you get consumed in the trap of business you forget about God. And that is totally normal, but we should want to change for the better! Don’t feel guilty, ask for forgiveness and He will forgive you! -1 John 1:19-

Here are some tips to get out of that mindset and into a God honoring one:

  • Keep your phone in another room before you go to bed…
    • Why? When you wake up, your phone won’t be right next to your bed waiting for you to log into your daily dose of Social Media.
  • Pray that God will assist you in changing your mindset
    • God can do anything. I mean anything. If His breath could take out humanity, He will help you to glorify Him! Trust me!
    • -Psalm 33:6- -1 Thessalonians 5:17-
  • Set priorities
    • Pray that God should be your first priority! Make sure that you spend at least 5 minutes every day in His word and talking to Him.
  • Make room for God
    • God deserves to be in every moment. Whatever we do, we should do for His glory. So don’t forget about God, but make room for Him in every moment.
    • -Collosians 3:23-

Here are some tips for remembering to read your Bible:

  • Put reminders around your area
    • This can be as simple as little sticky notes that you see when you are brushing your teeth or a little notification on your phone!
  • Have Bible studies with friends
    • The app YouVersion makes awesome plans that you can do with your friends on the app. Another option is FaceTiming or getting together once a week or every day and reading the same Scriptures. Fellowship is super important!
    • -Matthew 18:20- -Romans 12:5- -Hebrews 10:24-25-
  • Write down the Scripture you want to read the night before
    • This way you won’t have any excuses as to why you didn’t read your Bible. Trust me, this one helps. I find myself saying, “Well I don’t know what to read so I guess I just won’t.”
  • Have a friend that will keep you accountable
    • This is so important. Having someone to remind you to get in the Word is a great!
  • Make it fun
    • I love using highlighters and pens when I Bible journal. This is an easy way to express yourself through Bible reading! Mark up what you find interesting and helpful.

At the end of the day, God should be the most important thing in our life. This fact can get easily swayed, though. Whether through a crazy schedule, excuses, phone time, and just life in general, God gets put on the back burner a lot. I mean a lot. There have been countless days where I just let my Bible sit on my desk, and go about my tasks.

But God deserves so much more. Actually, God deserves perfect (@ the book of Leviticus), but He knew we could never be perfect because of our sin nature. So He sent Jesus. Thank you, God for that!

Find joy through your salvation. The only true joy we could find is through Him (-Psalm 16:11). So if you want to enjoy reading your Bible, have a sincere heart, and make your request know to Him. He is faithful, He is good, and He will help us through every day.
